Guess Who’s Back…

That’s right folks.  I am back.  And hopefully still on your reader :)

Look, I needed a break.  There is more to life than blogging (I swear it is true) and I needed to spend time on those aspects of my life for a while without feeling bogged down by writing blog entries.  And without the pressure of keeping up with every blog in the sphere.  Which I don’t even close to do, but felt like I was doing.  In the time since I took my break (six weeks total) I have kept up with many of you.  Whether via email or facebook or texting.  And in many cases, I was still keeping up with your blogs.  Just not commenting.  I have a feeling that my blogging from here on out with be more like it has been this past six months.  Sporadic.  Reading without much commenting.  Life before blogging.  And if you stopped reading Finishing is Winning, it’s understood.  And if you don’t comment, that is understood too.

But I am back.  And I hope you are still reading.

Updates, Updates, Updates…I’m BACK!!!!!!

Anyone still here…anyone?? Anyone??

It has been almost a full month since I have written!  So much to get caught up on!

Unless you are on my Facebook (and if you aren’t, why not?) you might have thought I died. Or was kidnapped. Or that I hate blogging.  Don’t believe the rumors- none of the above are true.  The truth is, I was so overwhelmingly busy that I could not sit long enough to finish a post.  But now things are calmed down a little and I am ready to give you the updates.  And there are some major updates!

  1. I turned 30- That’s right folks, I am officially in the 30 club!  And honestly, I feel great!  I am so happy to be out of my 20′s I cannot even tell you!  Plus, turning 30 has been so much fun…I had a surprise party back in May and then over my birthday weekend I went to Boilermaker to celebrate with 9.3 miles with two of my closest friends.  Last weekend topped off the birthday festivities with a trip to Baltimore with R2.  We stayed Friday-Sunday and had so much fun.  Yeah…hello 30, I think I love you!
  2. I GOT A NEW JOB!!!!- I did it!  I finally left my old school and got a new job!  This is the best news and best thing to happen to me in a long time.  I feel emotionally more stable and so much less stressed out.  I have been sleeping through the night again, not freaking out over dumb stuff and can enjoy my weekends more because I am not thinking about work.  I feel like my prayers have been answered!  I start in two weeks and I cannot wait!!!!!!
  3. I am still racing- Since I last wrote I raced the Boilermaker, Splash and Dash and NJ State Triathlon.  See below for race reports- they were all good ones!
  4. R2 and I are still amazing- I am not the mushy mushy type and I certainly dont talk much about my relationship publicly, but seriously…how lucky am I to have such a great guy.  R2 has been there for me every step of the way while I searched for a new job and is ridiculously supportive of my racing.  We have so much fun, we are almost always laughing and we genuinely like each other so much.  It has been a great six months!
  5. Marathon Training is underway- That’s right…the official training has begun.  I don’t want to rush summer or wish time away,  but I will be glad when the race itself is finally here.  This training is daunting!!!  I have to be honest, I don’t see myself ever doing a second marathon!

Three Race Reports!

Splash and Dash- Splash and Dash is a local swim/run race held in memory of a local boy who was killed in a car accident.  It is held at night and super fun.  I had a pretty good swim and used the run as a training run so it was so-so.  I was happy with it overall and can’t wait to do this race again!

Boilermaker 15K- Hello automatic PR :)   This race totally lives up to its hype.  While I wanted to kill myself up the first 3.5 miles of hill that seemed endless (hi, I train in SJ!!) I love love loved all the course support.  I am not even kidding, there was support every single step of the race!  People everywhere- more music than anything 1/2 marathon I ever raced and water/aid stations everywhere!  I went into this race with some shin pain and random back pain so I wasn’t sure what to expect out of myself; in the end, I was really happy with my time.  15K- 1:48:23.  Slow, steady and recovered well from it- stuck with the plan and it worked!

NJ State- This race was last weekend…you know, in the 92387 degree heat.  Which honestly, was still better than last years weather.  This was my first full tri this year- up to this point I had been doing only relays.  I went in thinking I would see how I felt and take it from there.  Listen- I KILLED the swim.  As in…20th out of 103 in my age group and 375th out of 1362 overall.  KILLED THE SWIM.  I felt like superwoman coming out of the water and was rearing to go!  I zoomed in and out of transition and started the bike.  Ugh…the bike.  My disdain for the bike runs deep and my goal was to do the same or better than last year, although my lack of bike training had me thinking I might not make it.  However, I did…beat my time last year by a few seconds :)   Hey, I’ll take it!  Once again, I zoomed in and out of transition and was ready to run.  I should clairfy…I was ready…my legs, notsomuch!  Took me a solid mile to get my legs back, but I knew I was doing so well overall that I kept pushing and smiling.  I crossed the line with a THREE MINUTE PR.  And I couldn’t have been happier!!!

What’s next?

Racing- This weekend I have Belmar tri, one of my favorites.  After that, my concentration is really on running.  Getting through this marathon training without injury and feeling good and confident.  I have a few 5k’s in August where I hope to work on my speed and then the WildWood half-marathon at the end of the month.  The WildWood half is going to be a good indicator of where I stand in my training.  They will have pacers and I plan to use one; my hope is I can keep the pace for 13.1 and reach a solid PR, which will give me confidence for the full marathon.  In September, I am running the Jersey-Liberty Half Marathon.  This is purely a training run with no PR expectations.  In Oct, I am running the LBI 18-miler (falls right into my schedule perfectly) and then November is the marathon!!!!

Life- I have a little over a week of in between jobs ending and beginning and then I start the new school year.  I am not the least bit sad to leave my current job (although I will miss most of the people, most families and the students) but I am scared/nervous/excited for the new job!  In September I will be heading downtheshore for my yearly, much anticipated, vacation.  Other than that, I am just feeling really blessed right now in my life.  Lucky, and blessed.

Pictures

You know I wouldn’t leave you without photos!!!  Here’s a hodgepodge of race photos from the S&D and NJ State…

PS-It goes without saying that my Reader was out of control, so I deleted everything and I am starting over today.  Please update me on anything awesome I may have missed!

A HUGE Surprise For Me, A Wedding & Lots Of Photos

If you read my last post, you would know that this past weekend I was attending a surprise party for a friend on Friday and a wedding Saturday.  Well…the surprise party…was for me!!

I am honestly still in shock.  Stunned, even.  My actual 30th birthday is not until July 9, so even though I had an idea that something was being planned…never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be in May.  As many people noted…if I had thought it was for me, I would not have worn pants!!!!

Luckily my mom knows me too well and knows that I would want to wear a dress.  She snuck in my house, and my closet, the night before and took a few dresses.  Whew! :)

My cousin Megan did the honor of holding my dresses.

Picking the dress!

The whole night was overwhelming and is still a blur!  Thank goodness for photos!  Here are a few of my favorite ones.

The surprise:

My mom pulled it off!!!

Tiara time!

Things to see:

The party favors, my sign and the guestbook which was a scrapbook of photos.

I am a HUGE Phillies fan; my Uncle made these signs!

The cake my friend Danielle made

My friend Danielle- I thought it was her party!

Having fun with work friends!

And of course, R2:

First time dancing :)

By the time we got home and had everything in the house on Friday night it was well after 1am.  We had an early wake up call Saturday because my good friend Kristen was getting married!  Her wedding was about 2 hours away in North Jersey with the reception about another 30 minutes north of there.  We went right from my house to R2′s, got ready and packed our bags and headed on our way.  The wedding was beautiful- gorgeous church and gorgeous bride!  The reception was an absolute blast.  The cocktail hour was full of amazing food and into the reception we danced and danced and danced!  Ok…and drank and drank and drank!  It was another super late, but really fun time!

Love these girls!

My favorite photo of R2 and I, thus far.

Overall, it was pretty much the best weekend ever.  Sunday night, after returned from North Jersey, my parents met R2 at my house and we opened gifts.  I am a very lucky girl to have so many wonderful people in my life.  And I feel lucky to have all of you to share this with through the amazing blog world!

Today In My Life

I totally stole this from Aron- I love these types of posts!  (Although they do remind me of my MySpace days- haha.)

Outside my window … it is a most beautiful sunny day!

I am hearing … kids, phones, kids, bells, doors, teachers, kids, bells, bells, kids, bells, phones, doors, bells and kids!  All. Day. Long.

I am thinking … that I have been awfully lucky this year to travel to so many awesome places!

I am thankful … for the opportunities I have in life.

I am reading … nothing at this moment.  Taking a break from NJASK data and report card stuff.

I am hoping and praying … that things stay as good as they have been.

I am wearing … brown knee-length skirt, white flowy shirt and brown open-toe sandals

I am creating … spreadsheets for NJASK data.  (This is why I needed a break!)

From the kitchen … I smell pizza and hear the kids in lunch.

Around the house … I do pretty much ALL the cleaning.  Yes, I have a roommate.

Plans for the rest of the week … Iron Hill for dinner tonight, working at the BFG, PIFA night in Philly and a relaxing Sunday brunch with one of my favorites.

A Picture to share

Happy Two Years & 400 Posts To My Blog

Today is the TWO YEAR anniversary of this blog!  Two years!!!  Wow!

I noticed recently that I completely let my 400th post go by without any hoorah so this is a combination of my belated 400th post and two year post.  Want to take a look back- here you can find my 100th, 200th and 300th posts.

Over the last two years, I have gone from a few readers who knew me IRL to meeting people from all over the world who read my blog.  I have even been lucky enough to meet some of you in person- and will get to meet more in Boston!  I know when I find a new blog that interests me, I love looking back on some of their older posts in an effort to get to know them.  As my readership has built, I notice that some of you have also gone back and read some of my older posts.  In honor of my two-year anniversary and 400th post, I have listed what I think were my top 10 posts over the last two years!

  1. Gotta Tri- My first post.  It all started with a few small paragraphs.  I had no idea whatsoever what this blog would turn into; I definitely never thought I would have kept it up for two years!
  2. My Sponsored TiaRT-  Back before I started the MBE, there was TiaRT.  For a series of months, faithful TiaRT’ers sponsored their own questions and put together a slideshow of racing.
  3. Philadelphia 1/2 marathon 2010 Race Report- This race has so much meaning to me.  It represents almost everything 2011 stands for.  The attitude I went into this race with is the way I feel about the year 2011.  I think, of all the road races I have done, this one has shaped me more than any other.  Oh yeah…and there was that 4 minute PR!
  4. Full Disclosure- This post will forever be a top post.  It really defined me as a blogger because it was the day I let you all really know me.  The good, the bad…the ugly.
  5. Tips for Tri’s- Never hurts to go over this post again!
  6. Happy Living Tips- Another one it never hurts to revisit.  Make the most out of every day!
  7. NJ State 2010 Race Report- My all time best time at a race from start to finish.  And my favorite race of all time too!  Re-reading that post always make me smile!
  8. Delaware 1/2 Marathon race report- Because you only get one first half-marathon!
  9. Biggest Loser Gimmicks- One of my more controversial posts.  And one of the first times I really ranted about something on my blog.  Recently, I have been watching A&E’s Heavy, which is amazing.  It is like Biggest Loser but without Jillian screaming and they don’t bother with gimmicks. Go figure.
  10. Too Slow to Race- I still remember the smoke that came out of my ears as I read the article that precipitated this post.  For the record, you are never, ever…EVER, too slow to race.  Ever.

Here’s to 100 more posts and another great year of blogging for Onelittletrigirl ♥

Do You Believe Finishing Is Winning?

As you all know, this blog supports any and all swimmer/bikers/runners.  Regardless of your speed, distance or anything else…if you put yourself out there, I consider you a winner!  If you support the idea that Finishing is Winning, and you are one of the first 15 to tell me, I will send you this…

That’s right, my very own sticker!  Thanks to Megan at Build-A-Sign that provides custom bumper stickers!  Megan contacted me earlier last month and asked me if I would be interested in making a car sticker.  Self promote?  I was all about it!  From beginning to end, Megan was great to work with.  I am not exactly the most creative person and I seem to have problems with anything technical.  But Megan was eager to help and I was able to get a sticker made up.  I love the final product!  Megan was kind enough to send me 25 total stickers so that I could give some away to my friends :)

If you love the final product, support Finishing is Winning and want to sport one of these awesome stickers, let me know!  Email me @ Jillyfly81 at comcast dot net.  I suck at getting to the post office (just ask Lindsay) but I promise I will get them to you before…well, lets not give me another deadline to screw up.  Just trust me, you will get them!

Seven More Things About This Girl

Jamie tagged me in a seven things post…and all I have to do is tell you seven things about myself.  Easy enough, especially because the post I wanted to post today is still in progress.

  1. I love listing things about myself. And listing things in general. I am a list person.
  2. One of my goals for 2011 was to try new things; one of those new things is beer.  I have already tried two and I liked one of them.  I think Jamoosh will be proud!
  3. I am having so many emotions about turning 30 this year.  Not one of them is because I feel old, because I do not feel old at all…I just feel…different.  And part of the emotional confusion is that I don’t know why I feel so different.  I just do.
  4. I have been trying to move this blog to my own domain for at least three months now- I am such a tech moron that it has been a complete fail.  I will take any and all help you can offer- my email is Jillyfly81@comcast.net!
  5. I have always wanted to be good at art.  I think even though I will never be good at art, I might start painting anyway.
  6. I feel like I was born in the wrong generation- I just feel really out of touch with people my age.  I tend to connect with people much older or a little younger.
  7. In my next life, I want to be the lead singer of a local band.  I don’t need to be famous, I just want to be on stage at local bars and sing and maybe play a little guitar.

I am supposed to tag seven people but so many already have been…how about this, if your birthday is in January, consider yourself tagged :)

Vacation Has Begun & More, More, More…

Wooohooo- this girl is officially on vacation :)   And I must confess, I have been a reallllly bad blogger friend.  I have over 300 posts on my Reader and probably have no chance of catching up, but I am going to do my best to get around to you all over this week.

Now let’s get caught up!

My vacation started on my half day Thursday and it could not have come at a better time.  I needed this time off so badly!  Thursday night I finished up all my shopping and went out with some friends so celebrate our time off!  It was so nice to be out and not have to worry about getting to bed at a certain time.

Woke up Christmas Eve with a full plate of things to do.  For the first time ever, I still had a few gifts to pick up and on top of that I still had to wrap every single gift.  Every. Single. One.  Yeah…stress levels were on overdrive.  I spent the morning picking up the gifts and wine for dinner and the early afternoon wrapping.  It looked like my living room through up Santa’s workshop.  How do you Santa’s get it all done??  If I had thought of it, I would have taken photos.  When it was all said and done, and it was all done…I was in holiday spirit overdrive.  I could not wait to get the festivities started!

Every year, my parents and I exchange a gift on Christmas Eve.  This year, I got a Dooney and Bourke purse.  This was huge because I have wanted a D&B purse since high school.  Every time I would think of buying myself one, I wouldn’t be able to justify it so I never did.  All these years, I have wanted a really nice purse but just couldn’t see spending that kind of money on myself.  So getting one for Christmas was HUGE!  My mom put this photo collage together of me opening the gift…

And then it was Christmas morning :)   And man…people might be right…I might be spoiled!  Or I was a very good girl!  I got lots of great gifts.  And even better, everyone loved the gifts I got for them.  It was a perfect Christmas.  Here are a few of the highlights:

I finally joined the crowd!!  Wooohoooo!!

All my fun new running shirts!  The are all perfect for me!

New pots and pans :)

In the days since Christmas, I have been really just trying to relax.  On Sunday we got hit with a blizzard, my night job closed and a few of my friends and I decided to get snowed in together.  We all headed over to my friend Lisa’s for sledding and a pajama party with Bailey’s hot chocolate.  I cannot even remember the last time I had a sleepover; we had an absolute blast!  Last night, I had to work and despite some jerk customers, I had a fantastic night.

Today, I headed back to the gym.  Yes, back to the gym.  It was a great workout.  Tonight, I had dinner with my friend Michele and then headed to my parents to watch the UNC game with my dad.  The rest of my vacation is full of more catching up with friends and working at the night job.  I am sure it will be over before I know it!

After re-reading this post, I realize it was kind of lame.  I feel like I owe you all more as my faithful readers but the truth is, I just haven’t been able to find the time to sit down with my thoughts.  I really want to get my Year in Review out before 2011 and I still have to update you all on my PiF totals.  In addition, I have some plans for 2011 that might surprise you all and have recently had some personal revelations that I want to share as well.  Ahhh…I need more hours in the day!  This year flew and these last few days are no different.

Since I clearly cannot catch up on 300 posts and will have to skip or skim many of them…please, tell me here about your holiday.  What was the best part of your holiday this year 2011?  Card swap members, did you get your cards???

Back At The Gym, Pilates Class, And Some Truth

So kids, I did it.  I finally went back to the gym.  The same idiots are still there and they still haven’t found a way to properly clean the bathrooms, however I was happy to see my old Pilates instructor was still there.  I haven’t been in ages and was worried she may have moved on (turnover rate is high at LA Fitness).  My friend Kate came along with me to give the Pilates a try (she had never been) and after class was over I was able to come to two conclusions: I really miss Pilates.  And I have lost a lot of my flexibility this year.  I could not believe how difficult some of the moves were for me; I never had those problems prior to my injury.  The only good part about that, is it will keep me motivated to keep going back to class so that I can get back into the shape I was in pre-injury.  Pilates is going to be a huge part of my off-season in which I am mainly focusing on stregth training.

It felt good to finally be working out again.  I was beginning to feel like a lazy slug and even though I hadn’t gained any weight, I could feel the weight shifting and noticed my clothes looking a bit different.  Getting solid and consistent workouts in around my 60-80/hours a week schedule is tough- I enjoy sleeping in until 6am and have a hard time wanting to work out at 11pm when I get home from work or on my only nights off.  But I know how good I feel when I am done a workout and I try to keep that in mind when I am feeling like doing nothing.

__________________________________________________________________________

Lacey did this the other day, inspired by Mark Bittman on the Whole Living website, and I loved it…

I included both Mark and Lacey’ answers…

If I could say one thing to myself 20 years ago…
MB- Things will get better, not worse.

L- Write down every single book you read, a favorite quote, and something you thought about it.

Me- Take advantage of being young.

My favorite place in the world…
MB- The United States.

L- My first thought: home. My second thought: some sort of vacation get-away.

The lesson I keep learning over and over…
MB- Most things that seem hard at first get easier, in either 10 minutes or 10 years.

L- If you stay up too late, you will be tired the next day.

Me- Listen to your gut.  Then follow what it tells you. 99% of the time, you already know the answers.

The movie I watch when I want to laugh…
MB- “A Night at the Opera” [the Marx Brothers].

L- Oooh, tough one. I feel like I laugh so hard at so many but I can only think of a few: Bill Murray in The Man Who Knew Too Little and What About Bob, Leslie Nielson in the Naked Gun movies, Steve Martin in Sgt Bilko, Rush Hour, National Lampoon…

Me- National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

The most scared I’ve ever been…
MB- Cannot talk about it.

L- The moment of getting hit by a car.

Me- There have been a few times.

No one knows I…
MB- Will not talk about it.

L- Made an elaborate plan to barricade myself in our log house bathroom and live out the rest of my life there. I figured it had the bathroom and the shower so all I needed to do was install a fold out bed, in-wall fridge, in-wall television, and a  slot for food and books to be passed through. Brilliant, right?

Me- If I told you…people would know.

Unhealthiest thing I’ve ever passed off as dinner…
MB- Hmm. Roast beef?

L- Copious amounts of cereal.

Me- Ice cream.

Personal philosophy…
MB- Seriously? The Golden Rule.

L-  The Diary of Ann Frank. The Giver. Night. My Side of the Mountain. The Berenstein Bears… hehe.

Me- Wow- over the years, I have been riveted by so many books.  I don’t think I could ever narrow it down to one, or even five.  I will say that I was most inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s Biography, written by her son.

I unwind by…
MB- Running, cooking, drinking, sleeping.

L- Castle!!! (TV show). Reading. Sleeping. Taking a hot shower.

Me- drinking wine, reading blogs, reading books/magazines…

Proudest moment in my career…
MB- Landing a column ["The Minimalist"] at the New York Times.

L- Beginning my graduate program…. getting good grades on work I put a lot of thought into.

Me- I really don’ t have a career, but my proudest moments academically were all the times I made Dean’s list while also holding a full-time job.  And most of all when I was honored with the Humanities Award in my junior year at Rutgers University.

What keeps me up at night…
MB- Writing a column for the New York Times. Well, not really. I’m 60, therefore: death.

L- What I have to do tomorrow. The next day.

Me- To-do lists, family concerns, financial concerns and so on and so on and so on…

I define “downtime” as…
MB- Almost any time a computer screen is not in front of me.

My mom was right about…
MB- Cooking being a worth-while activity.

L- Everything! She is amazing.

Me- The importance of being smart about money.

My mom was wrong about…
MB- The right way to cook hamburgers.

L- Nothing. See above.

Me- Not a whole lot.

The last time I lost my temper was…
MB- Yesterday.

L- On Saturday when Elliot told me we couldn’t get a train to NYC for New Year’s Day (for a friend’s wedding) but he was kidding except I didn’t know that. WHAT?! WE CAN’T GO?! I ALREADY RSVP’D! I THOUGHT YOU WERE BOOKING THE TRAIN?! ARRRRGHHH. hahaha. Something like that. Slight overreaction?

Me- It has been a long time since I have really lost it, but I get easily frustrated on the daily at my day job.

My favorite moment of the day…
MB- It’s either waking up or going to sleep, but it depends on the day.

L- Tea in the morning. Coffee after breakfast.

Me- The feeling of getting in bed at night

I wish I had more time for…
MB- Movies.

L- Vacation!!!!!!!!!

Me- Myself

I always make time for…
MB- Cooking.

L- Sleeping.

Me- Catching up with old friends when the opportunities arise.

I’m currently reading…
MB- “War and Peace” (yes, really).

L- The DSM IV… (kidding, slightly…)

Me- Notes Left Behind

Home means...
MB- Love.

L- Family!

Me- 208 ♥

I know some of you did this on Lacey’s comments page already; for those of you who didn’t, feel free to leave answers here, or post your own.  I would love to read others wisdom!
